Otis Redding: I’ve Been Loving You Too Long

Square

THE best soul singer of all time in my opinion. There was and is no one to touch the Mighty Otis. He co-wrote I’ve Been Loving You Too Long with the singer-songwriter Jerry Butler (b 1939) and recorded it in 1965 with producer Steve Cropper, who also played guitar on it.

Here is the album version.

Here he sings it at the Monterey festival in 1967. Six months later he died in a plane crash at the age of 26. With him were the five teenage members of his backing group the Bar-Kays.

The Rolling Stones had a go at it but I am not going to sully this entry with it. The backing is ok but Jagger simply can’t sing it.
