Bruce Channel wrote this with Margaret Cobb in 1959, when he was 19, but it was not recorded until 1961, and then only for a local record label in Fort Worth, Texas. When it sold well it was acquired by Smash Records, a subsidiary of Mercury. In 1962 it reached No 1 in America and No 2 in Britain. It features harmonica player Delbert McClinton, alleged to have helped John Lennon with his playing.
