Wink Martindale: Deck of Cards

Square

One of the cheesiest records ever made but I love it.  It is a spoken word song written by country musician T Texas Tyler based on an entry dated 20 April 1762 in a commonplace book belonging to Mary Bacon, a British farmer’s wife. Tyler took it to No 2 on the US country chart in 1948.

It was recorded in 1959 by Wink Martindale, and it got to No 7 in the US. In 1963 it reached No 7 in Britain.

Here Martindale performs it on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1959.
