Written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, this was first released by The Drifters in 1961 with four female back-up singers who would all achieve success: Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney), Doris Troy, Dionne Warwick and her sister Dee Dee Warwick. It got to No 16 in America.
The Searchers did it in 1963, with the unique and wonderful Tony Jackson on lead vocals. It got to No 3 in the UK.
