This is one of my favourite songs, and I love this version on Nilsson’s 1973 album A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night. The orchestration by Gordon Jenkins is terrific, almost doom-laden.
Here is a live performance from the same year with Jenkins conducting.
It was written by Herman Hupfeld (1894-1951) for the Broadway musical Everybody’s Welcome which opened on October 31, 1931.
It was featured in the 1942 film Casablanca, sung by Dooley Wilson as Sam, with accompaniment by studio pianist Jean Vincent Plumme. Ingrid Bergman was utterly beautiful.
