This was written by Mack Rice and recorded by him as Sir Mack Rice in 1965. It reached No 15 on the US R&B charts, in other words it didn’t do much. It would be great but the screeching chorus destroys it.
Wilson Pickett recorded it the following year, taking it to No 23 in the US and No 28 in the UK.
In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Wilson Pickett’s recording at No 434 in the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In the 2010 upgrade it dropped seven places to 441.
The best version is performed by Robert Strong and a great backing group in the 1991 film The Commitments, but I couldn’t use it as the heading as no one has heard of him. Correct me if I am wrong.
