Tammy Wynette: Stand By Your Man

Square

This was written by Wynette and Billy Sherrill, and released in September 1968. It was her most successful single, topping the US country chart and reaching No 19 in the pop charts. It was No 1 in Britain when it was released here in 1975.

In 1989, Lyle Lovett included the song on his third studio album, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band.

In 1993 Wynette and Lovett did a great performance together.

My favourite version has to be the one in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers, performed by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. Love this YouTube comment:

As a musician for over 45 years, I can tell you that this actually happened at the old Red Dog Lounge in Freer, Texas in 1972. They had a chicken wire setup in front of the stage for Mexican bands that screwed up. We played there and at the end of the gig, a fight broke out and the lead guitar player and I hid behind the amps to get away from the beer bottles and glass and liquid coming our way. Then a pistol shot rang out and that’s when all hell broke loose. What memories.
