Roy Orbison: Running Scared

Square

This brilliant ballad was written by Orbison and his frequent collaborator Joe Melson. It was released in March 1961 and went to No 1 in America and No 9 in Britain.

This is a reasonably contemporary live version from 1965, when you can marvel anew at how Orbison could sing without opening his mouth.

Del Shannon did a good version on his 1963 album Little Town Flirt.

The B-side of Orbison’s Running Scared was Love Hurts, one of my all-time favourite songs which I will cover more fully some time. Here it is if you can’t wait.
