This was written by Phil Everly, the younger brother (1939-2014). It was recorded on February 18, 1960 at the RCA studio in Nashville, and among the players was Chet Atkins on guitar. Released later that year, it went to No 8 in America and No 4 in Britain.
This is the record:
and this must be mimed, but the tone is different.
Sandy Denny and Linda Thompson recorded the song with The Bunch on the 1972 album Rock On.
Linda Ronstadt covered it in 1975, and her version peaked at No 2 in the States, though it did not trouble the UK charts. I think it’s dreadful.
This is a nice version by Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds on their 1980 EP, Nick Lowe & Dave Edmunds Sing The Everly Brothers.
Finally, the real thing again, the Everlys at their 1983 reunion concert.
