The Four Pennies: Juliet

Square

This was written by three of the group’s members, Mike Wilshaw (keyboards, bass) Fritz Fryer (lead guitar) and Lionel Morton (singer). It was released in 1964 and went to the top of the UK chart, but was the only 1964 Number One by a UK group not to chart in America. It contains one of the worst lines in pop: ‘Things you do reminiscent of you’.

  1. Fabulous record – they certainly don’t make ’em like that nowadays. The Four Pennies were from Blackburn I think, and Fritz Fryer later produced Motorhead.
