David McWilliams: The Days of Pearly Spencer

Square

If you were a Radio Caroline fan, this record, written and performed by David McWilliams, will take you straight back to the autumn of 1967 when it seemed to be played at least ten times an hour, probably more. This was because McWilliams’s manager Phil Solomon was co-director of Caroline. Despite the plugging, and the double-page adverts in the music press, and the ads on double-decker buses, it got nowhere in the UK. The BBC refused to play it because of the Caroline connection, which may explain it.

In 1992 Marc Almond got it to No 4 in the UK.

YouTube has this track of David Bowie singing it, but I can’t find out anything about it.
