Phil Everly: The Air That I Breathe

Square

This beautiful song was written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood and first recorded by Hammond on his 1972 album It Never Rains in Southern California.

It was arranged by Warren Zevon for 1973 Phil Everly’s solo album Star Spangled Springer, and produced by Duane Eddy. It was released as the B-side of God Bless Older Ladies, from the same album. It did not make the charts anywhere. Unbelievable.

In 1974 the Hollies covered it with a ghastly twanging guitar intro, and their single reached No 2 in Britain and No 6 in the US. There is no justice.
