Scott Appel: Place To Be

Square

Lovely version of the song from Pink Moon, one of half a dozen Nick Drake covers on his unjustly neglected album Nine of Swords.

  1. Liked that, very floaty.

I’ve said before that, apart from “Northern Sky”, I’m not attracted to Nick Drake’s music – it is much too sad. That was a good cover though, so maybe there is life in cover versions of his songs.

  2. Apropos of nothing (I keep using that expression!) here is another record from the swinging sixties, I thought of it because I was in a floaty mood.

“Floating” by VAMP, released in 1968, is a very rare – and good – single.

The legend, for many years, was that the singer was David Bowie, and this made it a very much sought-after disc. It’s not Bowie though, and has nothing to do with him. VAMP was a supergroup; the name an acronym of the surnames of its members The “P” was Viv Prince, the Pretty Things’ drummer and one of the wild men of 1960s rock.

It sounds nothing like Bowie, so I’ve always been baffled as to why anyone would have thought it was him. The only reason I can think of is the singer’s pronunciation of the words “Floating”, “so” and “close”, in a hammy cockney way as Bowie used to do.
