The Who: I Can’t Explain


I think the Who were better than the Stones, but I am aware that this is a minority view. This was their first single under the Who name, written by Pete Townshend. It was recorded in November 1964 with the Ivy League on backing vocals. It got to No 8 in the UK in 1965, and No 93 in America.

I’ve included some live performances as they were such a great stage act (though they didn’t do the falsetto vocals as well as the Ivy League). This is 1970:
