Sedaka co-wrote this with regular collaborator Howard Greenfield and released it in 1962. It topped the American charts and reached No 7 in Britain. Later Sedaka recalled that the intro with nonsense words came about because they couldn’t think of a lyric.

In 1969 Lenny Welch recorded a slower version with a different intro (I can’t find out whether he or Sedaka wrote the words). It went to No 34 in America in January 1970.
Sedaka recorded the Welch version in 1975, with a taster of the old one at the start. It got to No 8 in America in February 1976.
