This was written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and produced by Spector. It was released in November 1964 and topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic in early 1965. It was ranked at 34 on the list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone. I really don’t think it is anything like that good.

Cilla Black (she of the foghorn voice) got to an undeserved No 2 in Britain in 1965.
