Danny and the Juniors: At the Hop

Square

This was written by Artie Singer, John Medora and David White. It was released in late 1957 and reached No 1 on the US charts on January 6, 1958. In the UK it got to No 3.

It was performed by Sha Na Na at the 1969 Woodstock Festival.

Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids, performing as Herby and the Heartbeats, did it in the 1973 film American Graffiti.

The Beach Boys recorded it between October 1984 and January 1985 for their 1985 album The Beach Boys, but it was not used. What a shame! It’s arguably the best of the lot.

  1. This is a favourite of mine from the clean-cut doo-wop vocal harmony category of early pop groups : “Peppermint Twist” by Joey Dee and the Starlighters.

Actor Joe Pesci was in this group apparently, though not at the time of this record.
