Elton John: Daniel

Square

To me, Elton is a 60s pop performer born too late. This is a terrific tune, with Elton playing a flute-toned Mellotron. It was written by him and Bernie Taupin and recorded for the 1973 album Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player. Released as a single, it got to No 2 in America and No 4 in Britain.

This is a live performance from the same year.

  1. He has made some good records but what a ghastly fellow, and he just gets ghastlier the older he gets!

Still, you don’t have to like the person to like the music. Elton’s songs, being massive hits, take me back to certain points in time. I loved “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” when I was knee-high, and “That’s Why They Call It The Blues” reminds me of 1983, my first full year of working, and having money to spend – which I mostly spent on records (and beer!)
