In tribute to the Supremes’ Mary Wilson, who has died at the age of 76, here is the group’s seventh No 1 in America. I have never been a big Supremes fan but this is better than I remember. It was written and produced by Motown’s main team, Holland–Dozier–Holland, and released in 1966. It got to No 3 in Britain.
This is a live performance on the Ed Sullivan Show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Itn438i30hk/ in September 1966. Clearly Diana Ross was the lead performer and this was reflected shortly afterwards when the group were renamed The Supremes with Diana Ross, and later Diana Ross and the Supremes.
In 1982 Phil Collins recorded it for his second solo album Hello, I Must Be Going! Released as a single it went to No 1 in the UK (two places higher than the original) and No 10 in the States.
PS: According to Wikipedia the words of You Can’t Hurry Love were based on the gospel song (You Can’t Hurry God) He’s Right on Time written in the 1950s by Dorothy Love Coates who sang with the Gospel Harmonettes.
