Melanie: Ruby Tuesday

Square

This was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It was recorded by the Rolling Stones in 1966, and released in January 1967. It was the group’s fourth chart-topper in the United States and reached number three in the United Kingdom as a double A-side with Let’s Spend the Night Together. To me it exposes Jagger’s inadequacy as a singer of tunes.

I much prefer Melanie Safka’s version from her 1970 album Candles in the Rain. It reached No 9 in the UK and No 52 on the US Billboard chart.

  1. “Ruby Tuesday” is a great song to start with but Melanie’s version tops it. Powerful, haunting and beautiful, it’s possibly the only cover of a Stones that is preferable to the original.
