This was written by group members Jim McGuinn (lead guitar) and Chris Hillman (bass) in response to the success of the manufactured group The Monkees. It was included on the February 1967 album, Younger Than Yesterday, but released as a single a month earlier, on January 9, 1967. It got to No 29 in America but did not chart in the United Kingdom.

They performed it at the Monterey Pop Festival on June 17, 1967.

Here is a version by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in around 1985.
