Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: Helpless

Neil Young’s voice is unique. He wrote Helpless before he joined Crosby, Stills & Nash, and the new quartet recorded it for their 1970 album Déjà Vu.

Young played the song with The Band in the group’s final concert with the original lineup, ‘The Last Waltz’, on Thanksgiving Day 1976 at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom.

A different mix of Helpless was released in 2009 on Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972) with a harmonica introduction. To my ear the not very subtle drumming has been increased to sound like rifle shots.
