Buddy Holly: Words of Love

Square

Holly wrote this song and recorded it on April 8, 1957. It was released on June 20 and amazingly got nowhere.

However an almost unrecognisable version by the Diamonds was released a month earlier and got to No 13. The US public of the time should be ashamed.

The Beatles performed it on the BBC radio show Pop Go The Beatles broadcast on August 28, 1963, and the track was eventually released on the 2013 compilation album On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2. I presume it is one of the tracks I recorded and wrote about here.

They also recorded it on the 1964 album Beatles for Sale. I can find only a remastered version on YouTube which I think has made the lead guitar a lot more twangly, which I don’t find an improvement.

  1. I think the best version of this song is the one by The Beatles, and of the two versions here, the BBC one is the superior. The guitar does sound too bright – this was a problem on many of their CD releases. It didn’t sound like that on the original “Beatles For Sale” LP.
