Lou Reed: Berlin

Square

This is from his eponymous 1972 debut solo album. ‘In Berlin, by the wall, you were five foot ten inches tall. It was very nice. Candlelight and Dubonnet on ice.’

Producer Bob Ezrin later suggested to Reed that he further explore what happened to the couple in the song and he turned it into a 1973 concept LP which was initially rubbished by the critics but later hailed as a masterpiece. I much prefer the Bowie/Ronson produced Transformer album, but here’s Berlin’s title track.
