Jefferson Airplane: Somebody to Love

Square

This was written by guitarist Darby Slick and recorded by his band The Great Society (for some reason it was titled Someone to Love) with vocals by Grace Slick. It was released in February 1966 and went nowhere.

Later that year Grace Slick joined Jefferson Airplane and the group recorded the song for their 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow. It was released as a single in April 1967 and reached No 5 in America. I can’t bear it but Rolling Stone magazine ranked the record at 274 of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Here they perform it at Woodstock, 1969.
